Oceania

From the rainforests of Queensland in Australia, to the mountains of New Guinea, Oceania is home to a unique set of mammals, birds and reptiles. Marsupials evolved before placental mammals, and were out-competed over most of the world by their more aggressive cousins, but placental mammals never made the migration to Oceania, and so marsupials evolved to fill all the niches filled elsewhere by the mammals we are more familiar with.

This has created a fascinating set of mammals, with some equally fabulous names - we will be looking for bandicoots, quolls and platypus.

In addition to the wildife, New Guinea is home to some of the most incredible tribes left on Earth, such as the Dani people whose men wear only penis gourds.
