Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean is home to some spectacularly beautiful and unique islands. None is more so than Madagascar, truly the Eighth Continent. A piece of continental rock, squeezed between India and Africa when Gondwanaland began its monumental break-down, Madagascar came to rest in its current position some 80 million years ago.

Over millions of years of isolation a unique group of species evolved: mammals, birds, reptiles and flora that are found nowhere else on earth. Lemurs, a group of primitive primates known as prosimians, are only found here, and there are more than 70 taxa, ranging in size from the smallest primate on earth, a mouse lemur weighing 25g, to the largest lemur, the indri, which is one of the most beautiful singers on Earth.
